Hot Spot Rigging Tips

Picture
The Hot Spot Flasher will perform well in a variety of setups. The diagram shows a common setup for Chinook Salmon. The distance between the downrigger release and the Flasher is 18ft and the tail distance is 42". A leader weight of 30 lbs. is optimal weight for a sports fishing set up.
The ideal leader or "Tail" length behind the flasher varies by the type of fish targeted and the lure used behind the flasher. When trolling slowly an fishing for smaller Salmon, use the shorter dimensions. When trolling quickly and for larger Salmon, use the longer lengths. Leader length may vary from year to year and from one location to another. This helps to make fishing so facinating... we can never know it all!
Tail Length Recommendation
Hoochies
Bait / Lures
Chinook Salmon, Lake Trout and Halibut
42" - 50"
50" - 70"
Coho (Silvers) Salmon
32" - 38"
36" - 42"
Trout, Sockeye, and Pinks
27"
42"
Two Flashers can be fished together at slightly different depths to enhance their attractiveness. If you are fishing close to the bottom, it is very productive to use a Mini 8" or Mico 5" Flasher on the bottom, tied about 4 feet back with and Original 11" Flasher set up 6 - 8 feet above on the downrigger line.

Trolling Speed

One of the Hot Spot Flasher's major advantages is that it can be trolled at a wide range of speeds. Its productive rolling and kicking action is consistent anywhere between 1.5 and 3.5 knots.

Colour Selection Recommendations

Water conditions help to determine the optimal colour of Flasher. Water colour variations are caused by algae and plankon growth and silt. They can change within a few miles, especially in salt water. Water colour can best be observed by looking at the prop wash, particularly when air bubbles are present.
